Baseball Fundamentals: A Beginner's Guide

Baseball is a beloved sport, steeped in tradition and captivating fans with its mix of strategy, athleticism, and the potential for thrilling plays. Whether you're eager to try it yourself or want to better understand what's happening on the diamond, this guide will cover the basics you need.

Basic instructions on game rules and playing for baseball

The Field and Equipment

  • The Diamond: The heart of a baseball field is the diamond-shaped infield. The four corners of the diamond are the bases: home plate, first base, second base, and third base. Beyond the infield stretches the expansive outfield.
  • The Pitch: At the center of the diamond is the pitcher's mound, a slightly raised area where the pitcher stands. Directly in front of the mound is home plate.
  • Foul Lines: Two white lines extend from home plate through the outfield, marking the boundaries between fair and foul territory.
  • Equipment:
  • Gloves: Players use specialized leather gloves to catch and field the ball.
  • Bat: The offensive player uses a wooden or metal bat to strike the ball.
  • Ball: A hard ball with a stitched leather cover.

The Teams and Positions

  • Two Teams: Baseball is played between two teams of nine players each.
  • Defense: The team in the field aims to prevent the other team from scoring runs.
  • Pitcher: The pitcher throws the ball toward home plate where the batter attempts to hit it.
  • Catcher: Positioned behind home plate, the catcher receives the pitcher's throws and aims to catch and field any batted balls near home plate.
  • Infielders: Four infielders -- first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman – try to field ground balls and batted balls within the diamond.
  • Outfielders: Three outfielders – left fielder, center fielder, right fielder – cover the outfield, aiming to catch fly balls and prevent base hits.
  • Offense: The team at bat aims to score runs. A player who successfully hits the ball is called a batter and then becomes a runner attempting to advance around the bases.

The Basics: How to Play

  • Innings: A baseball game consists of nine innings. Each inning is divided into a top half and a bottom half. In the top half, the visiting team bats while the home team is in the field. The teams switch roles in the bottom half.
  • Outs: Each team gets three outs per half-inning. An out can occur in several ways:
  • Strikeout: The batter misses three pitches that are within the strike zone (the area above home plate) or swings and misses at any pitch.
  • Flyout: A batter hits a ball that is caught in the air before hitting the ground.
  • Groundout: A batter hits the ball on the ground and a fielder throws the ball to first base before the runner reaches the base.
  • Force Out: A runner must advance if a teammate behind them hits a ground ball and can be tagged out if a fielder touches the base the runner is forced to run to while in possession of the ball.
  • Scoring: A run is scored when a batter hits the ball, becomes a runner, and safely touches all four bases in order (first, second, third, and home).

Hitting Techniques

  • Grip: Place your dominant hand above your weaker hand on the bat handle.
  • Stance: Stand shoulder-width apart with knees slightly bent, facing the pitcher sideways.
  • Swing: Keep your eye on the ball and shift your weight as you swing, aiming to make contact with the ball squarely. Rotate your hips and follow through with your swing.

Pitching Basics

  • Windup: Start facing home plate, then raise one knee, pivot your foot and twist your body as you throw.
  • Stretch: A balanced position before the pitch, with the pitcher standing sideways to the hitter while holding the ball in their glove in front of their chest before stepping toward home plate and throwing.
  • Delivery: Coordinate your steps and arm motion to throw the ball overhand towards the catcher.
  • Pitch Types: Fastballs, curveballs, changeups, and more add variety and keep hitters guessing.

Rules

There are several main codified sets of rules

The official baseball rules, published by Major League Baseball, govern all professional play in the United States and Canada. Many amateur and youth leagues use the OBR with only a few modifications for safety, including Little League, PONY League, and Cal Ripken League. Most professional leagues outside of North America (such as Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League) also use modified versions of the OBR, although these often have more pronounced differences. . .

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), the governing body for international tournaments such as the Summer Olympics, World Series and WBSC Premier 12, has announced its own official rules for the first time. set for 2023; WBSC previously relied on a modified set of OBRs. The WBSC rules are largely similar to the OBR, with minor differences including the timing of the pitch clock and the tie scores of extra innings. These rules do not apply to the World Baseball Classic presented jointly by the WBSC and MLB.
